Philander, Morris out as England opt to bat

South Africa will be needing both these players to regain some sort of form if they are to challenge the home team and not lose their first series in England since 1998.

Ben Stokes had hoped to be there at stumps but he was bowled by Kagiso Rabada for 58 in the penultimate over the day, bringing nightwatchman Toby Roland-Jones to the middle.

At stumps, paceman Anderson had figures of four wickets for 33 runs in 15 overs. "All in all, I'm a lot better, I'm energised and have replenished a lot of the fluids", he said on Wednesday after net practice ahead of the fourth Test at Old Trafford.

But his seventh Test at Old Trafford was the first fixture since what was known as the Pavilion End had been renamed in honour of Anderson, England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker. "We spoke about creating pressure.and getting as many balls (as possible) in the right area". South Africa has managed to win only once in their last nine meetings while England's last defeat at the ground came way back in 2001 to Pakistan.

For a while it looked like Elgar and Bavuma had not read the script, however, as they increased their fifth-wicket partnership to 108 before Roland-Jones sparked the first flurry of wickets.

But with a sunny day and good pitch offering some of the best batting conditions this series, struggling opener Heino Kuhn and Bavuma got bogged down.

Bavuma might have been run out on 23, but Moeen failed in his attempt to take the stumps, while two hard chances were dropped in successive balls.

Cook did have one moment of discomfort against the sharp pace of Rabada, who hurried him on the pull as he combated a round-the-wicket bouncer, and gloved a top-edge over the keeper's head for four.

In the end he went for 17, suicidally prodding at one from Duanne Olivier which seamed away and was easily taken by keeper Quinton de Kock.

The 25-year-old says he was prepared for the late call-up following the injuries to Chris Morris and Vernon Philander, and has been preparing and practising like he was going to play throughout the week.

It cost South Africa just 12 runs - to De Kock's relief - as Olivier trapped Root lbw fairly soon after, with an added bonus for South Africa as Root wasted a review.

He also passed 5,000 Test runs becoming the third youngest ever behind Sachin Tendulkar and Cook, who was out to a straight one from spinner Keshav Maharaj four short of his 56th Test fifty.

While England might go unchanged for this test match, the Proteas might make a few changes.

"Test cricket is a harsh world to come into and the tough thing for him is that there is talk about players being found out at global level". England have kept the batting line up quiet more often than not in this series, but Saturday is their chance to stand up.
