United Kingdom travellers face long waits at European Union airports

The group, which represents carriers including easyJet, Ryanair and British Airways' parent company IAG, claimed some passengers are missing their flights because of the issue.

It means that rather than being waved through by security staff and doing quick checks, travellers from affected countries will now have to have their passport checked and scanned doubling the time it takes to pass through the borders causing long delays.

Some tourists are being hit by airport delays which go on for longer than their flights.

The spokesman said Dublin Airport's "on time" performance for departing flights in June was 10pc better than the same month past year.

It came as Ryanair, Europe's busiest airline, admitted that nearly a quarter of its flights had run late over a 24-hour period this week because passengers could not get through security to board flights to the UK.

Holidaymakers are being warned they face lengthy delays at European airports this summer after border checks were tightened.

According to BBC News, this process is taking two minutes longer per passenger.

"Airports like Madrid, Palma, Lisbon, Lyons, Paris Orly, Milan or Brussels are producing shameful pictures of devastated passengers in front of immigration booths, in lines stretching hundreds of metres".

The scope and duration of such a temporary reintroduction of border control at the internal borders is limited in time and should be restricted to the bare minimum needed to respond to the threat in question.

At the same time, the European Commission has defended the increased security checks and reminded critics that this is all about protecting passengers and a direct response to requests from EU member states for more stringent checks.

She said it was the responsibility of member states to provide enough resources to make the checks "as smooth as possible", adding it was "very clear that member states had time to prepare". "We can not have on the one hand a joint request from member states to have more checks and controls, to increase security, and the same time have complaints about longer waiting periods". Airlines UK revealed on Tuesday it had urged the Government to use "whatever influence it can" to pressure European Union states to adequately staff their airports in light of the tough new measures.
