Trump backs bill to cut legal immigration, slash green card issues

President Trump introduced new legislation Wednesday with Sens.

Trump announced his support for the RAISE Act at the White House on Wednesday afternoon, alongside Cotton and Perdue, throwing his weight behind what he called a new "merit-based" system. "This competitive application process will favor applicants who can speak English, financially support themselves and their families, and demonstrate skills that will contribute to our economy".

To achieve the reductions and create what they call a "merit-based system", Cotton and Perdue are taking aim at green cards for extended family members of US citizens and legal permanent residents, limiting such avenues for grown children and siblings.

The senators also propose to end a visa diversity lottery that has awarded 50,000 green cards a year, mostly to areas in the world that traditionally do not have as many immigrants to the United States, including Africa.

"There are no conversations about any Cabinet members moving in any capacity", she said, adding that Trump "has 100 percent confidence in all members of his Cabinet". John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of SC, and many Senate Democrats oppose making partial changes to immigration law without creating a pathway to legal status for immigrants who arrived in the country illegally and put down roots. The bill is a modified version of legislation proposed in April, which would have cut immigration in half, and focuses on cutting back what is known as "chain migration" - ways of immigrating to the US based on family ties.

The bill would also aim to slash the number of refugees in half and eliminate a program that provides visas to countries with low rates of immigration. That bill's headed straight down the toilet in the Senate, needless to say; the Democratic Party has sound electoral reasons to prefer poorer immigrants.

Limiting legal immigration is opposed by business groups, which rely on low-skilled workers for agriculture and other jobs. "The bottom line is to cut immigration by half a million people-legal immigration-doesn't make much sense", Schumer said.

"The bottom line is to cut immigration by half a million people, legal immigration, doesn't make much sense", said Senate Democratic leader Charles Schumer of NY, who called it a "nonstarter". The senators said it would replace the current permanent employment-visa framework with a skills-based system that rewards applicants based on their individual merits.

"Restricting family members from joining their families in the United States will make it harder for them to become fully American", the National Immigration Forum's executive director Ali Noorani said in a statement. Trump vowed to crack down on illegal immigration during his campaign and signed two executive orders soon after taking office to increase border security and interior enforcement.

"We want a merit-based system, one that protects our workers, our taxpayers, and one that protects our economy".
