7-month-old boy found dead in hot vehicle

Police say Josiah was discovered dead only after his father drove round trip, twice, between the apartment complex and the church to drop off the mother and a sibling.

The infant had apparently been left in the vehicle for about two hours by his father, who forgot the boy, police said.

No arrests had been made as of Saturday night, Fortune said.

Phoenix police Sgt. Mercedes Fortune later identified the dead child as Josiah Riggins.

Authorities said both deaths remain under investigation.

On Friday, authorities say a 7-month-old boy died after being left alone in a hot vehicle in a northeast Phoenix neighborhood in triple-digit conditions. "Everyone is cooperative", Fortune said.

Just a day later a father claimed to have discovered his one-year-old son dead when he returned to his auto which was left parked near a church, also in Phoenix.

Since 1998, 729 children left in vehicles have died of heatstroke, according to NoHeatStroke.org, an organization that tracks the deaths of children in hot vehicles.

"It's shocking, devastating, just sad", said Zettica Mitchell, who said she was a cousin of the baby's father.

"How could this happen to good people and a good boy", the child's aunt, Michelle Anderson, told the Arizona Republic as she wiped away tears.

The boy was in the care of his grandparents at the time, police reported.

According to the safety organization Kids and Cars, an average of 37 children die each year in hot cars. The child was under the care of his parents.
