Based THAAD system intercepts target missile over Pacific

"In addition to successfully intercepting the target, the data collected will allow MDA to enhance the THAAD weapon system, our modeling and simulation capabilities, and our ability to stay ahead of the evolving threat", said Air Force Lt. Gen. Sam Greaves, Missile Defense Agency director.

"A medium-range target ballistic missile (MRBM) was air-launched by a U.S. Air Force C-17 over the Pacific Ocean", the announcement says further, adding that part of the THAAD system stationed in Alaska pinpointed and intercepted the target.

On July 11, the USA test-fired its THAAD anti-ballistic missile system from Kodiak Island, successfully intercepting a target missile launched from an Air Force Cargo plane north of Hawaii, according to Fox News.

South Korea said Saturday it will speed up deployment of a THAAD battery on its territory because of the latest North Korean test of an intercontinental ballistic missile. After the recent launch of the North Korean leader Kim Jong UN said that the reach of the missiles were the U.S. mainland, and that sanctions pressure America encourages North Korea to develop nuclear weapons. But Friday's missile was reportedly more advanced than the first, which had the range to reach Alaska.

The exercise will help the U.S.

North Korea's missile test has prompted Seoul to deploy four additional THAAD units, according to a Reuters report.

Moscow and Beijing, in a joint statement, called on Washington to immediately halt deployment of THAAD in South Korea after North Korea's test earlier this month.

The weapon was sacked by a U.S. Air Force plane over the Pacific Ocean and intercepted by the system located in Alaska, according to an MDA release.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, has said that deployment of THAAD elements in South Korea and Alaska "destroys the strategic balance in the world". North Korea can use these missiles against its neighbors, specifically South Korea and Japan.

The U.S. Army launched the missile Sunday over the Pacific Ocean.

The test had been expected to take place this weekend as part of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency's routine programs.
