Cowboys Release WR Lucky Whitehead After Reported Arrest

Because the Cowboys' release came after the close of the NFL's business day, Whitehead would not appear on the waiver wire until Tuesday, making him eligible to be claimed by another team by Wednesday afternoon.

Then, a report surfaced that Whitehead was charged with larceny for shoplifting in Virginia and failing to appear for a court hearing. Prince William County Police later confirmed Rich's account. On June 22nd, Whitehead was reportedly arrested by the Prince William County Police Department in his home state of Virginia.

Monday morning also marked the first time the Dallas Cowboys found out about any of this, which has Whitehead in some very hot water with head coach Jason Garrett. The Cowboys, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, never actually filed the paperwork to cut Whitehead on Monday. They said the alleged shoplifting incident happened hours before Whitehead's flight from Dallas to Washington, D.C., departed.

Whitehead made the news last week as well when he reported on Instagram that his dog Blitz was being held for ransom.

The Dallas Cowboys have not issued a formal statement, but during Tuesday's news conference at Training Camp Garrett said the team is standing by their decision.

Despite the fact that Whitehead is innocent, ESPN's Josina Anderson says the Cowboys have no plans of bringing him back.

The Cowboys, however, released Whitehead and cited a pattern of behavior in justifying the move. Star running back Ezekiel Elliott has faced no team discipline, and has been defended by owner Jerry Jones, after being accused of domestic violence, and of assault at a bar. Lucky deserved better. Don't we all when are surprised an accusation out of left field? When officers arrived, they located the man in the parking lot'.

Lucky Whitehead has had the worst luck for the past two weeks.

Used primarily as a return specialist, Whitehead signed as undrafted rookie free agent out of Florida Atlantic and is beginning his third season with Dallas. Additionally, Whitehead carried the ball 20 times as a rusher for 189 yards.
