UK Parents Drop Bid to Send Charlie Gard to US

The parents of British baby Charlie Gard on Monday ended their legal fight for an experimental USA treatment that they hoped might improve his condition.

The family's attorney said during court proceedings July 24 the couple withdrew their challenge to allow Charlie to receive an experimental medical treatment in the USA because "time has now [run] out for Charlie", according to a BuzzFeed News report.

Sky News reported that Gard and Yates "sat with their heads bowed" as their decision was read in court, ending their months-long legal battle.

"We only wanted to give him a chance of life", and said the proceedings had resulted in a "whole lot of time being wasted".

Charlie Gard's parents were told that their son had irreversible brain damage after he suffered seizures before Christmas, but they did not believe it.

The parents of Charlie Gard are embroiled in a legal dispute about the treatment of the terminally-ill baby.

The hospital treating Charlie Gard in London said that it has been receiving death threats, and staff members are being subjected to abuse due to the highly controversial case.

"Some cases are about legal principles. some cases are about legal facts and expert opinions. some cases are also about time, and sadly this case is now about time", Armstrong said.

The parents of Charlie Gard, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, have withdrawn their legal challenge before the High Court in London, England.

"Charlie did have a real chance of getting better", she said in tears.

It leads to weakened muscles and organ dysfunction, among other symptoms.

The child's case won global attention, with Ms Yates and Mr Gard receiving support from Pope Francis and US President Donald Trump.

Update: Gard and Yates will use the £1.3 million they raised for Charlie's treatment to establish a foundation, the BBC reports, to make sure Charlie's voice "continues to be heard".

British and European courts have agreed with the hospital's doctors, ruling that moving Charlie would unnecessarily prolong his suffering, without any realistic hopes of success.

Chris Gard and Connie Yates had been fighting to take him to the U.S. for experimental treatment.

'Despite conflicting issues, we have always had the utmost respect for all the staff who work tirelessly at Great Ormond Street Hospital and the very hard jobs they do every day.

However, Judge Nicholas Francis had scheduled the two-day hearing for this week to consider fresh evidence after Dr. Hirano came to London to examine the child. They suggested switching off his life support and allow him to die peacefully. "Even now, Charlie shows physical responses to stressors that some of those treating him interpret as pain and when two worldwide experts assessed him last week, they believed that they elicited a pain response", said the Gosh statement on Monday.

The judge paid tribute to the infant's parents, saying it was impossible to comprehend the agony they faced.
