US Declares Iran complying on Nuclear Deal

Although the 2015 agreement only covers Iran's nuclear program, administration officials accused Tehran of being "unquestionably in default of the spirit" of the deal because of its interference in neighboring countries, its human rights record and other activities, Reuters reported.

The move came a day after the Trump administration told the Congress that Iran is complying with the nuclear deal signed two years ago with the U.S. and other world powers, and as such would continue to be exempted from American sanctions.

The sanctions also target what the USA says is a transnational criminal group based in Iran and three people associated with it.

"The president and the secretary of state judge that these Iranian activities severely undermine the intent of the (agreement), which was to contribute to regional and global peace and security", one official said.

According to senior officials, the Trump administration would certify to US Congress that Iran had so far been compliant with its commitments under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal reached between Iran and six world powers - Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the US. He chose not to elaborate on the issue until the State Department's full statement regarding the Iran deal.

The president wisely rejects his predecessor's dreamy belief that we can separate the question of Iranian compliance with JCPOA from the larger problem of the regime's behavior-as if Tehran could go on supporting terrorism and aiding rogue regimes but somehow keep its word not to pursue nuclear weapons.

Iran's chief of staff, Major General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, said that designating the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps a terrorist organization would be a huge miscalculation, and threatened the consequences of doing so, saying it could destabilize the entire region, Iranian media reported.

"Think of Iran as the ground force responsible for Assad's survival", Itani said.

The statement also criticised Iran's support for the Syrian government and groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas.

An official familiar with the internal discussions said "Trump had spent 55 minutes of the meeting telling them he did not want to" preserve the Iran deal.

USA officials told reporters late Monday that President Donald Trump recertified to Congress that Iran is sticking to the terms of the 2015 agreement.

"The Americans should be aware that their measures are against the Iranian nation but the nation is firmly resolved to counteract the USA acts", the parliament speaker said.

President Trump agreed on Monday to certify again that Iran is complying with an global nuclear agreement that he has strongly criticized, but only after hours of arguing with his top national security advisers, briefly upending a planned announcement as a legal deadline loomed. But the latest re-certification indicates that, despite the views of some hawkish Trump aides, those who favor upholding the deal have the upper hand for now.

The National Iranian American Council (NIAC) also expressed dismay at the state of the deal, noting in a press release, "The JCPOA represented an opportunity for the US and Iran to change course, broaden engagement, and end the policy of sanctions and antagonism".

White House officials emphasized that the administration's stance toward the nuclear deal remains under review.

"Well, we've taken a route that has been prescribed within the nuclear deal..."

Behind the scenes, advisers argued that there was no alternative but to recertify the deal for now because the past sanctions regime the United States had with European allies against Iran is no longer in place and unilateral sanctions are not as effective as multi-lateral ones.
