Grassley may subpoena former Trump campaign chairman

The powerful committee chairman says he is sending the President's eldest son the request in a letter.

Grassley told CNN this morning that the committee has had discussions with an attorney for Donald Trump Jr., who revealed this week he met with Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya, who suggested she had damaging information on his father's Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

A person close to Manafort said that he hasn't yet received a letter from the committee about a possible interview.

Donald Jr. accepted a meeting, along with Manafort, with a Russian lawyer claiming to have ties to the Russian government in June 2016.

Multiple Congressional committees as well as Special Counsel Robert Mueller are investigating potential collusion between the Russian government and the Trump campaign.

Trump Jr. said Tuesday he would be "happy" to work with a Senate Intelligence Committee now investigating alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election after he himself acknowledged meeting a Kremlin-linked lawyer during his father's campaign.

The younger Trump is a key player in the controversy over Russia's meddling in the 2016 election.

Trump Jr. said Monday, after the meeting was reported but before releasing the emails, that he is "Happy to work with" another Senate committee "to pass on what I know".

While Grassley spoke with reporters Wednesday morning, the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing for Federal Bureau of Investigation director nominee Christopher Wray was in session.

Trump, 39, responded "if it's what you say I love it" and set up a meeting with the source, according to the emails. That email led to the June 9, 2016 meeting, at which Trump Jr. later said no meaningful information was provided.

The FBI, Congress and Special Counsel Bob Mueller are also questioning Manafort as part of the Russian Federation probe, per the Washington Post.

President Trump said that "most people would have taken that meeting", contradicting his incoming Federal Bureau of Investigation director's testimony that Donald Trump Jr should have instead alerted authorities.

But Trump also refused to dispute an assertion made by Russian President Vladimir Putin that Trump believed him when he said that Russia hadn't meddle in the election during their lengthy meeting in Germany last week.

"In retrospect, I probably would have done things a little differently", Trump Jr. said.
