Rep. Trent Franks: British Judiciary Holding Charlie Gard 'Hostage'

The British hospital treating a terminally ill baby boy said today it would examine claims that he could be treated after US President Donald Trump and Pope Francis drew global attention to the case.

At a hearing at the High Court in London Monday, the child's parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, were given until Wednesday to present new evidence with a hearing set for Thursday.

Trent FranksTrent FranksHouse Republicans to offer bill to help parents of critically ill British child Lawmakers consider new security funding in wake of shooting GOP senators pleased with Ivanka Trump meeting on family leave, child tax credits MORE (R-Ariz.) and Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) said they are proposing legislation to grant Gard's parents lawful permanent USA status so they can "pursue their best hope for Charlie". "You know we've got new evidence now so I hope that the judge changes his mind", Yates told BBC radio. "I will be the first to welcome that outcome", Francis told Gard's lawyers.

Great Ormond Street Hospital is arguing that it should be allowed to take Charlie Gard off life support because there's "no benefit" to allowing him to stay alive.

Commenting on the 11-month-old baby boy being held by a London hospital in defiance of his parent's wishes to seek an experimental treatment in the United States, Reverend Franklin Graham said it is "alarming" and "unfathomable" that the hospital would overrule the parents, and added that "this is one of the dangers of socialized medicine".

Charlie suffers from a rare mitochondrial disease, and his parents want to take him to the United States for an experimental treatment. They said he was diagnosed with mitochondrial depletion syndrome when he was 9 months old. As a result, he is unable to move his arms or legs or breathe unaided. Then I start to worry about pain, and the court's finding that "it is likely he is suffering it and at more than a low level".

However, last week, the hospital agreed to consider new evidence involving Charlie's condition before taking him off the ventilator.

The hospital requested a review of the justice after the publication of a letter from the Bambino Gesu Hospital in the Vatican, which presented its research and recommended that the Great Ormond Street Hospital "reconsider" its position.

They say life-support treatment should stop.

A White House official later stated that members of the Trump administration, but not the president, had spoken to the parents in calls facilitated by the British government.

President Trump has expressed a willingness to help. "I must decide this case on evidence, not tweets".
