United Kingdom trade deal expected 'very quickly,' confirms London visit

A meeting between the president and the prime minister on the margins of the Group of 20 summit in Hamburg went longer than scheduled, a United Kingdom official said, and was dominated by discussions of a free-trade deal between the two countries.

Although leaders from both countries have said Trump plans to visit, doubts hover over Trump's first trip to Great Britain after reports that the president fears protests there.

"There's no country that could possibly be closer than our countries and for a long time", he said, adding that he and May had developed "a very special relationship" and that trade would be big factor between their countries.

The President made the comments Saturday as he met with British Prime Minister Theresa May at the G20 meeting in Hamburg, Germany, confirming that the two countries are now working on a trade agreement.

The two leaders held a almost half hour meeting before the closing session of the G20 summit, Turkish officials have said without giving more details.

Beasley said the agency had worked hard with the White House and the USA government to secure the funding, but Trump would insist that other countries contributed more as well.

Any negotiations for such an accord would further drive a wedge between Britain and the European Union, which has warned London against striking any separate agreement before its divorce from the bloc is complete.

Later, Trump met with Indonesian President Joko Widodo - who seemed intent on getting him to commit to a Jakarta visit during his presidency.

Theresa May paid a visit to Trump in the White House earlier this year, shortly after his inauguration.

"I will be going to London", Trump said when asked by reporters in the room if the visit was still on.

The US president hailed the "very special relationship" he had developed with May.

But no date will be set out today for Trump to visit the UK.

As well as discussions on a possible future trade deal with the US, Mrs May was also expected to raise the President's controversial decision to pull out of the worldwide agreement on tackling climate change. The US will want to know what access its companies and banks in Britain will have to the rest of the EU.
