How this baby won free birthday flights for his entire life

A new-born baby was awarded a lifetime of free flights on a United States airlines after his mother gave birth while travelling from Fort Lauderdale to Dallas. Even though he was born four weeks early, Christoph was born healthy at 7 pounds and 19.5 inches long.

At 36 weeks pregnant, passenger Cristina Penton became anxious when she began to feel unwell on flight 971 from Fort Lauderdale to Dallas/Fort Worth, Spirit said in a statement yesterday. "But our flight attendants are trained to handle medical emergencies in flight and they have access to doctors on the ground via inflight communication". A pediatrician and a nurse on board helped the flight attendants with the delivery. "Soon after that, it was clear I was having my baby, and I was in pure panic".

When Penton notified flight attendants that she wasn't feeling well, attendants went into action and notified doctors on the ground to see if any medical professional were on board.

On Tuesday, Spirit Airlines gave the family gifts for the baby, plus a special present: free flights for Christopher and a guest to anywhere Spirit flies on or near his birthday for the next 21 years. "We were just all along for the ride!" "He is absolutely ideal", Penton said.

Penton gave birth Saturday night on a Spirit Airlines flight that took a detour to New Orleans when she went into labor.

Most women probably imagine that the birth of their baby will occur in the trustworthy confines of a hospital.

A video of the remarkable birth was filmed by passenger Shelley Hedgecock Stark who, with the permission of Cristina, recorded the extraordinary moment. Under Spirit's contract of carriage, the airline allows children under the age of two to fly for free if they sit on an adult's lap.

A baby born during a flight to Dallas has been given free flights on his birthday for life by a USA airline. "From the time that her contractions started to the time the baby was delivered, the plane was still in the air, so the baby was actually born on-board", Berry told TODAY.

Cristina Penton and her newborn son Christoph. Her husband, who drove to meet her in New Orleans, later said "I told you so", after warning her not to take the trip.
