Italy's EU Ambassador Says No To More Migrants

Over 73,300 migrants have landed in Italy since January, a 14 percent increase from the same period past year.

Maurizio Massari, Italy's ambassador to the European Union, warned Dimitris Avramopoulos, the European Union migration commissioner, that Italy may close its ports to rescue boats which do not fly the Italian...

More than 10,000 Africans were ferried from Libya to Italy between Sunday and Tuesday - with 5,000 arriving on Monday alone - and whilst the Italian coastguard coordinates the operations, a large number of the ships taking part are NGOs sailing under foreign flags.

The Italian government is considering blocking boats carrying migrants from landing at its ports after almost 11,000 refugees arrived on its shores in five days. That would affect mostly European-based humanitarian rescue ships, which have flooded the waters off Libya's coast in the past year to pick up migrants.

The figures also raise the spectre of the chaos witnessed in 2015 when the number of migrants seeking asylum was at its highest in 25 years.

Earlier this month, Breitbart London reported on the ousting at local elections in Italy of a mayor who had struck a deal with the Hungarian financier to turn the tiny island of Lampedusa into a gateway to Europe for migrants travelling from Africa.

The surge in migrants this week prompted Italy's interior minister, Marco Minniti, to cancel a trip to Washington to address the growing humanitarian crisis, which is quickly morphing into a political one for the country's left-leaning coalition government.

Avramopoulos responded via Twitter that he had discussed with the Italian envoy "our support after increasing numbers of arrivals in Italy".

Also among Wednesday's arrivals was a Spanish Navy ship bringing over 900 migrants to the Italian island of Sardinia, including 126 women - six of them pregnant - and about 50 youngsters, some of them without accompanying adults.

"We are now facing an biblical exodus", said Paolo Romani, head of ex-Premier Silvio Berlusconi's opposition Forza Italia party in the upper house of Parliament. Often that country is Italy.
