Warmbier 'brutalized, terrorized' in N. Korea: father

The earliest images of his brain they received from North Korea are dated April 2016, Kanter said.

Warmbier's release coincided with basketball star Dennis Rodman's latest visit to North Korea, though Michael Anton, a usa national security spokesman, told CNN there is no connection between the two.

The release came following work by State Department officials and did not involve former basketball star Dennis Rodman, who arrived in North Korea the same day Warmbier was sent home, Fred Warmbier confirmed. He says he's proud of his son, and does not believe the North Korean's story that he contracted botulism soon after his conviction and slipped into a coma after taking a sleeping pill. "I don't know what being in shock is, but I'm pretty sure I was", he said, referring to being informed Otto Warmbier was in a coma.

Fred Warmbier got emotional as he revealed he was wearing the same jacket his son wore when he gave a televised confession and apology in North Korea in February 2016.

A student at the University of Virginia, Warmbier was arrested for removing a political banner from a wall at a North Korean hotel.

"He fought to stay alive through the worst the North Koreans put him through", Warmbier said.

Warmbier described the family's frustration over having to keep quiet while efforts to release their son went nowhere, and the sense of relief that followed. "I call on them to release the other Americans".

With the emplacement of the THAAD anti-missile system in South Korea and increased pressure from the Chinese (at the behest of President Trump), North Korea is feeling the pressure.

Doctors treating Otto Warmbier, the comatose United States student released from North Korean detention this week, have said the 22-year-old had suffered extensive brain damage, the cause of which remains unknown.

Two days after Wyoming High School graduate Otto Warmbier landed in Cincinnati on a medically equipped plane from North Korea, his father spoke to the media.

"You thanked President Trump and then you also said that the past administration didn't do enough, so do you feel like then-President Obama should have been doing more to help?" the reporter asked. He was last seen publicly that March, when he was sentenced for subversion to 15 years in prison with hard labor.

Doctors say Mr Warmbier had no trace of botulism in his system, but has a severe brain injury and is in a state of "unresponsive wakefulness".

Fred and Cindy Warmbier said in a statement they learned of their son's condition a week before his release.
