Facebook surpasses 2 billion users

The billionaire said he plans to use Facebook to connect 1 billion users to different communities.

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of the social networking service, released a statement in the form of a post on Tuesday (June 27) to celebrate the occasion. Facebook's earlier stated mission was "to make the world more open and connected". "It's an honor to be on this journey with you".

More than a billion people take part in "groups" at Facebook each month and more than 800 million people "like" something at the social network on an average day, she added. There are 7.5 billion living, breathing humans on planet Earth, and now one-third of them are active Facebook users.

Yet perhaps stewarding a 2 billion person community is responsibility enough to get out of Silicon Valley and figure out how Facebook impacts people's lives.

Much like the creation of Facebook itself - the largest social-engineering project in history - that shift could have broad and unanticipated consequences.

His ultimate goal is to convince 1 billion users to join Facebook communities. It does not include people who use the Instagram or WhatsApp networks but not Facebook.

"What we really care about is being able to connect everyone", he said.

The king of social media now boasts over two billion global users.

To Zuckerberg, now 33, the effort to foster meaningful communities reflects his recent interest in ways Facebook can make the world a less divisive place, one that emerged following the fractious 2016 presidential election.

In comparison, YouTube is a distant second at 1.5 Billion users.

Eight of 10 people don't like that they're being tracked by third parties, according to research from Envista Forensics, while 71 percent of people are more concerned about online privacy then they were a decade ago. The features are aimed at giving moderators, the unpaid organisers of groups on Facebook, more power to police groups from spam and hate speech, or to simply keep a group on topic.
