UAE: Arab states don't seek 'regime change' in Qatar

Yemen's internationally backed government, which has lost the capital and large portions of the war-torn country, also cut relations with Qatar, as did the Maldives and one of conflict-ridden Libya's competing governments.

"The demands are so aggressive that it makes it close to impossible to now see a resolution of that conflict", Olivier Jakob, a strategist at Switzerland-based oil consultancy Petromatrix, told Reuters.

Immediate closure of Turkish military base that's being established in Qatar, and stop all military cooperation with Turkey inside Qatar.

The United States and the European Union have called for unity in the Gulf. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it would give its official response to Kuwait, which has been acting as the mediator between Qatar and its neighbors. But Qatar has pushed back, claiming the sanctions are aimed at "limiting Qatar's sovereignty, and outsourcing our foreign policy", rather than fighting terrorism.

Thani said the demands are not "reasonable and actionable" - two criteria laid down by the U.S. State Department this week in an attempt to mediate the dispute.

"There's a lot on the list that is simply not true or unreasonable, so how can we comply?" he said.

Saudi Arabia and three other Arab countries that recently cut diplomatic ties with Qatar issued a harsh list of demands Friday, insisting that the wealthy but tiny Persian Gulf nation shut down the news broadcaster Al-Jazeera, abandon ties with Islamist organizations and provide detailed information about its funding for political dissidents. Below are the demands, as confirmed by a Gulf official involved in the process, some of which are followed by Qatar's previously stated position on the issue.

Qatar confirmed Friday it had received the list and was studying the demands. Saudi Arabia and other Sunni-led nations have accused Qatar of inappropriately close ties to Iran, a Shiite-led country and Saudi Arabia's regional foe.

Qatar is the world's leading exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hosts the biggest American airbase in the Middle East.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt want Qatar to meet the 13-point ultimatum in return for an end to a almost three-week-old diplomatic and trade "blockade" of the emirate.

- Shut down the Al Jazeera media network and its affiliates.

While the USA military has said it wouldn't change its posture at Qatar's Al-Udeid Air Base, Trump made a series of tweets calling into question his commitment to the peninsular nation.

Earlier this week, US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Washington was "mystified" by the failure of Saudi Arabia and its allies to justify the ongoing isolation of Qatar, a key US partner in the fight against ISIS.

Qatar has repeatedly denied it funds or supports extremism.

The move has left Qatar, whose only land border is shared with Saudi Arabia, under a de facto blockade by its neighbours.

In Qatar's first response to the demands, government communications director Sheikh Saif bin Ahmed Al Thani said on Saturday that they went far beyond the four governments' stated aim of combating terrorism.

It was also ordered to scale down its diplomatic relations with Iran, limit its commercial ties and expel members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards from its territory.

Qatar's Human Rights Committee said the demands represented "gross violations" of basic rights.

Considering how the fulfilling of many of these demands is not possible, and how they seem more like Saudi dictation to turn Qatar into its governorate, social media users took to Twitter and criticised the Saudi demands with humour.

RT asked Osman Faruk Logoglu, former Turkish ambassador to the United States, whether the Gulf nations will also put pressure on Turkey over the situation with Qatar.

"This is an Arab issue that requires an Arab solution", Otaiba said.

"I doubt that Qatar will comply with those demands", Truevtsev said.

United States officials said the goal of the Russians appeared to be creation of a rift among the USA and its allies.
