Journalist Kevin Powell Sues 'All Eyez On Me' For Copyright Infringement

After seeing the movie, Powell says he saw many similarities to his articles - which he says would've been the only place knowledge of specific characters and scenes could be pulled from.

Kevin Powell has issued a statement regarding the lawsuit on his Facebook page.

The Hollywood Reporter claims that in a complaint filed in a NY federal court, journalist Kevin Powell claims that the biopic has lifted the content off several of his articles from Vibe magazine.

Kevin Powell says in the suit filed Friday that "All Eyez On Me" borrows from articles he wrote and interviews he did with Shakur in the 1990s for Vibe magazine.

In his complaint, posted online by editors at The Hollywood Reporter, Powell's lawyer states that a character in the movie, Nigel, was never a real person but a character invented for his articles. The movie, the suit claims, was therefore "derived from Plaintiffs' Original Work". The film follows Shakur from his early days in New York City to his evolution into being one of the world's most recognized and influential voices before his untimely death at the age of 25. Kevin's exclusive and intimate access to Tupac Shakur came as a result of the trust established over the years. James G Robinson and David Robinson from Morgan Creek are producing along with Program Pictures' LT Hutton. It's not hard to tell that Harper's character is based on Powell. A representative for Lionsgate declined to provide a comment to the Associated Press Saturday.

This isn't the first celebrity to speak out on All Eyez on Me in a negative context, as Jada Pinkett Smith tweeted against the film for using made up scenarios between her and Tupac.

"All Eyez On Me" debuted last weekend at No. 3 with $27.1 million.
