UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes hurt in truck-train collision

Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes suffered apparent head trauma after a truck he was in was hit by a train Friday, ESPN reported. Law enforcement says 1 person was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Dana White says that injured person is in fact Hughes. Hughes is now hospitalized in Springfield, Ill. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family. White said a truck Hughes was in collided with a moving train earlier today (June 16).

White also told ESPN that Hughes was assisting a friend with something before the accident occurred.

Hughes is considered one of the best UFC fighters ever, holding the 170-pound title twice and defending his title seven times.

Hughes (45-9) held the UFC's welterweight championship at various points between 2001 and 2006.

Hughes, 43, was a two-time All-American wrestler at Eastern Illinois before transitioning to mixed martial arts after college.

Hughes (45-9), who beat some of the promotion's most renowned fighters, including George St-Pierre, B.J. Penn and Royce Gracie, resides in IL.

Hall of Famer Matt Hughes has been airlifted following a collision.
