Uber Founder Suspected Delhi Rape Was Conspiracy By Rival Ola

Alexander, Uber's president of business in Asia, sought the records after suspecting that the rape allegation was part of a plan by India competitor, Ola, to derail his company's business in the country.

The handling of the situation by Alexander in India in December 2014 is one of the latest in a line of incidents has seen some of the top management of the company receiving flak. Police in New Delhi considered whether to criminally charge the ride-hail company over its lax background checks and questioned the the city's general manager Gagan Bhatia.

The Recode report further said Alexander, Kalanick and senior vice president Emil Michael read the medical report and tried to blame Ola for the incident, calling it an attempt to damage Uber's reputation. He traveled to India, specifically to obtain the medical records and because he believed that the same was fabricated. Uber fired Alexander on Tuesday over the medical records issue, the New York Times reported.

Verma also said it would have been inappropriate for Uber to gain possession of the records, as they were "very private and sensitive documents". Adding fuel to the fire, Uber told employees on Tuesday that more than 20 people had been fired as part of an investigation into harassment claims by law firm Perkins Coie LLP.

When the news website contacted the company about Alexander's actions, it was told that he was no longer employed there.

The incident in Delhi in 2014 had led to widespread changed in the ride-hailing taxi sector. But the case also brought increased scrutiny on Uber, and the company was even banned from operating in Delhi until June 2015.

Uber's CEO Travis Kalanick, embroiled in accusations and investigations into whether his company has a hostile environment toward women, has taken to the office's lactation room in order to clear his mind.

"Travis never should have looked at the report and he should have fired him immediately", said one executive of Alexander. Uber later rolled out new safety features in India and across the globe following the incident.

When asked about whether Alexander was included among the 20 people fired revealed yesterday, Uber had denied that was the case, but following the company finding out about Alexander's actions, it has also made a decision to let him go.

Former engineer Susan Fowler wrote a detailed blog post in February detailing her experiences with sexual harassment by her boss, which human resources executives responded to by blaming Fowler and defending her boss.
