Police Arrest Man Who Allegedly Stole From Victim of Portland Attack

Amid the horror and chaos, Simpson said, Tschaggeny removed the ring from Best's finger and stole his backpack.

"It's completely heartless. There's no other way to describe what happened", Portland Police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson said Friday.

Best, a 53-year-old army veteran, was stabbed to death after standing up for two girls being verbally assaulted by a man on the train.

Portland cops said that the personal items taken from Best are important to his family, and ask for help with identifying and finding the suspect.

After Best was stabbed, police believe he was approached by George Tschaggeny.

The suspect was caught on surveillance camera leaving the train carrying Best's backpack.

"They've suffered an enormous loss and this is just one more layer of tragedy to their already bad experience", Sgt. Pete Simpson said, adding that it was "really an unconscionable act" and "awful scenario for this family".

"The backpack and wedding ring belong to victim Ricky Best", the Portland police said in a release.

Jeremy Joseph Christian is accused of stabbing Best and Taliesin Namkai-Meche, 23, to death.

The suspect in the stabbing attack has been charged with aggravated murder, attempted murder, possession of a restricted weapon, and second-degree intimidation. Man arrested in the killingsAfter boarding the MAX light rail train last Friday afternoon, Christian went on a tirade directed at two African-American teenagers - one who was wearing a traditional Muslim hijab, according to witnesses and a police affidavit.

Authorities also recovered Best's missing backpack, although officers said some items, like the Army veteran's wallet, were missing. The third man, 21-year-old Micah David-Cole Fletcher, survived the attack.

Federal Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele said earlier this week that the bureau is investigating the attack to determine whether to charge Christian with terrorism or a federal hate crime.
