Ex-Penn State administrators get jail time

The judge sentenced former Penn State president Graham Spanier and university officials Gary Schultz and Tim Curley in court on Friday.

Schultz and Curley pleaded guilty to one count of child endangerment and testified at Spanier's trial.

Former athletic director Timothy Curley, 63, was sentenced to seven to 23 months incarceration and two years probation.

Curley and Schultz were both sentenced to three months in jail followed by four to 20 months of house arrest.

Sandusky, a former assistant coach in Penn State's football program, is now serving a 30- to 60-year term in prison after he was convicted on 45 counts of child sexual abuse. Spanier's attorneys have said they plan to appeal his conviction.

The case hinged on coaching assistant Mike McQueary's claim that he witnessed Sandusky - a retired member of the coaching staff who ran a charity for youngsters - molesting a boy in the team showers in 2001.

Schultz received six to 23 months and two years probation.

Ex-Penn State President Graham Spanier (SPAN'-yur) and two other former school administrators are facing sentencing for child endangerment for failing to report now-convicted sexual predator Jerry Sandusky to authorities.

Three former Penn State administrators have been sentenced for their roles in the Jerry Sandusky sex crime's scandal.

After the character witnesses had finished speaking and the defendants had repeatedly expressed their remorse, Boccabella sentenced all three of them to short prison terms.

"He was a complete and utter failure as a leader when it mattered most", said Laura Ditka, a state prosecutor. They also allegedly planned to inform him that his "guests" - children Sandusky brought on campus - would no longer be allowed to use Penn State facilities.

Curley and Schultz were arrested in 2011, and Spanier in 2012. If he had ordered an investigation, it is "highly likely Spanier could have spared some if not all of the victims who were molested by Sandusky", Shapiro said.

Prosecutors also attacked Schultz, saying it defied common sense that he seemed unwilling to acknowledge the sexual nature of what McQueary reported, given what Schultz knew about the 1998 incident.

The scandal led to the firing of beloved football coach Joe Paterno shortly after Sandusky's arrest, and he died of cancer two months later at the age of 85.

The prosecution's key evidence included notes and email exchanges in which Curley, Schultz and Spanier debated what to do after McQueary's report.
