'Windows 10 is only OS safe from WannaCry', says Microsoft

Blocking systems and files until a ransom was paid, the ransomeware deleted files within days if users refused to pay up.

It uses a technique developed by Guinet that involves searching for prime numbers stored by the malware in the computer's memory in order to deduce the decryption key.

Microsoft had released a patch for Windows 7 in March but it appears that many users hadn't updated to the latest version.

Given the very specific way in which the tool works, it only functions if the infected computer has not been rebooted since the WannaCry ransomware and the associated memory has not been allocated and erased by another process.

The prime numbers may also be overwritten in the system's memory over time, causing the tool to fail, Suiche acknowledged.

Europol said on Twitter that its European Cybercrime Centre had tested the team's new tool and said it was "found to recover data in some circumstances".

A leading cyber expert said Monday consumers shouldn't blindly accept a company's free offer to remove WannaCry ransomware from their computer.

"The infection wave is far from being over", he wrote.

Weeks after WannaCry launched a devastating attack that affected the operations of large companies, government agencies, and institutions across the globe, cyber security company Kaspersky Lab learned that about 98 percent of the computers affected by WannaCry are running various versions of the Windows 7 software.

In a survey for Reuters, BitSight found that 67 per cent of infected PCs it infected were running Windows 7, despite the OS being installed on fewer than half of Windows PCs worldwide.

In South Africa, the WannaCry ransomware attack crippled Telkom's customer platforms - which impacted customer services.

"The attackers initiated an operation to hunt down vulnerable public facing SMB ports and, once located, used the newly available SMB exploits to deploy malware and propagate to other vulnerable machines within connected networks", he wrote.

"The exploit technique is known as HeapSpraying and is used to inject shellcode into vulnerable systems allowing for the exploitation of the system", the firm said in an advisory.

Malwarebytes advised users to install patches regularly and to turn off protocols such as SMB if they're not needed.
