The Square by Sweden's Ruben Ostlund wins Palme d'Or

Phoenix was recognized for his role in Lynne Ramsay's thriller "You Were Never Really Here", in which he played a tormented war veteran trying to save a teenage girl from a sex trafficking ring.

The Jury Prize was given to Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev for Loveless, in which a couple in the midst of a divorce find their lives thrown into even greater turmoil by the sudden disappearance of their 12-year-old son.

Most odds makers didn't have The Square' as a favorite to win the prestigious Palme d'Or, the top prize awarded at Cannes.

She continued: "I do believe that if you have female storytelling you have more authentic female characters..." At the closing ceremony, Smith made the room crack up by imitating Nicole Kidman receiving her award.

Kidman, who appeared in four films screened at this year's festival, also received her own special honor as a 70th-anniversary prize, according to the Verge. First Léonor Serraille scooped the Caméra d'Or award for her first film "Jeune femme", then British filmmaker Lynne Ramsay took the best screenplay award for "You Were Never Really Here" (tied with Yorgos Lanthimos' "The Killing of a Sacred Deer").

Taking to the stage of the Palais de Festivals, the actor apologised for attending the event in trainers, explaining that he didn't expect to win at all.

The Beguiled star Nicole Kidman, who was the recipient of the 70th Anniversary Prize spoke out about the lack of female filmmakers during a panel promoting The Beguiled. His AIDS drama "120 Beats Per Minute" earned some of the best reviews of the festival.

"This film is an homage to those who died but also those who survived and are still alive, who had so much courage", said Robin Campillo, the director and a former member of the ACT UP movement featured in the film.

Spanish irector Pedro Almodovar presided over a jury that included German director Maren Ade, American actress Jessica Chastain, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, French multi-hyphenate Agnes Jaoui, South Korean director Park Chan-wook, American megastar Will Smith, Italian director Paolo Sorrentino and French composer Gabriel Yared. The "bitter" part of this news comes with the fact that Coppola is only the second woman to take home the award in Cannes' 71-year-old history.

The red carpet at Cannes is humming with stars ahead of the ceremony that will award the coveted Palme d'Or prize.

"It was an injustice", said Almodovar.
