Investigators seek motive in MS shooting spree that left 8 dead

Suspect Willie Corey Godbolt told The Clarion-Ledger he meant to commit "suicide by cop" after a shooting rampage in Bogue Chitto and Brookhaven that left eight dead, including a Lincoln County deputy, two boys, his mother-in-law and other family members.

Godbolt, while handcuffed and on the ground, told The Clarion-Ledger newspaper shortly after his arrest that his intention was to be killed by police.

Mitchell spoke to the AP from his home in Bogue Chitto, Mississippi, which authorities say was the site of the first shootings.

A sheriff's deputy and seven other people were shot dead overnight in southern MS, authorities said Sunday.

The man suspected of killing a sheriff's deputy and seven others in rural MS is listed in good condition at a hospital. Investigators say he will be charged with one count of capital murder and seven counts of murder.

Each of the victims were either related or knew Godbolt.

However, Godbolt himself shed some light on what happened in a video interview with the newspaper as he sat with his hands cuffed behind his back on the side of a road. "I was having a conversation with her step-daddy and her mama and her, my wife, about me taking my children home", Godbolt said while still surrounded by officers. Eight people, including a sheriff's deputy, were killed at three different houses in the small towns of Bogue Chitto and Brookhaven. That's what they do. They intervene. It cost him his life.

The stepfather-in-law, Vincent Mitchell, said Godbolt's wife and their two children had been staying at his Bogue Chitto home for about three weeks after she left her husband because of domestic violence.

After the sheriff's deputy arrived at the house, Godbolt looked as if he were about to leave, then reached into his back pocket, pulled a gun and opened fire, Mitchell said.

Mitchell told the Associated Press that things took a horrific turn after a deputy was called to the house to remove Godbolt. But he said his wife, his wife's sister and one of his wife's daughters were killed.

Lawmen arrested Willie Corey Godbolt, 35, 377 Brister St., Bogue Chitto, early Sunday for the slayings of deputy William Durr and others who were either relatives or acquaintances of Godbolt by blood or marriage, including two juveniles.

The deputy was identified on Sunday as 36-year-old William Durr, a two-year veteran at the sheriff's department and four-year veteran of the Brookhaven Police Department.

Caleb Edwards says when a gunman entered a home early Sunday, "I thought I was going to die".

"Suicide by cop was my intention", he says. Brookhaven school officials identified the students as Austin Edwards, 11, from Lipsey School and Jordan Blackwell, 17, of Brookhaven High School.

Durr's off-duty hobby was ventriloquism and he would take his puppets to schools and churches to perform for children. "He was just there", Godbolt said of the deputy. "Too often, we lose one of our finest".

In a statement, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant thanked the law enforcement agencies that responded to what he called the "tragedy in Lincoln County".

"He had a very bad temper", he said. Services went on as planned on Sunday.

"We will have some time together in the morning to try to help them work their way through their loss, he said Sunday afternoon. Sometimes it comes in the door".

"I'm devastated", Vincent Mitchell told the Associated Press. A man was arrested Sunday in a house-to-house shooting rampage that left several people d.
