Europe can no longer rely on US, Britain: Merkel

Before today's cable and broadcast network Sunday political talk shows aired, German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced in a speech that President Donald Trump's visit to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and G7 summits showed that Europe no longer sees the United States as a reliable ally.

Speaking to around 2,000 people in a beer tent in Munich, Merkel neither mentioned US President Donald Trump directly nor the global disputes about defense spending and climate change policy.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel lifts a glass of beer during an election campaign of her Christian Democratic Union, CDU, and the Christian Social Union, CSU, in Munich, southern Germany, Sunday, May 28, 2017. "I experienced that in the last a few days, and therefore I can only say that we Europeans must really take our fate into our own hands".

The German Chancellor emphasized the need for friendly relations with the United States, Britain, and Russian Federation, while she spoke at the campaign event.

She and others were trying to convince Trump of the benefits of the Paris climate agreement to Trump, but he walked away from the summit without making any firm commitments on the deal.

Mrs Merkel is on the campaign trail ahead of elections in September.

Merkel's comments were similar to some she made shortly after Trump's November election.

President Donald Trump still refuses to back the 2015 Paris agreement to fight climate change, blocking efforts by world leaders meeting in Sicily to get the new United States leader to endorse the treaty, Italy's prime minister said today (26 May). But they carry extra heft now that Trump is actually in office - and after Trump had a days-long opportunity to reset relations. Even though most of the Sunday shows discussed or mentioned Trump's overseas trip, none of the shows reported on this perspective of his visit.

"We Europeans must fight for more climate protection, fewer weapons and against religious (fanaticism), otherwise the Middle East and Africa will be further destabilised", Gabriel said.

Trump offered a more positive assessment on Twitter Sunday, writing: "Just returned from Europe. Hard work but big results!", he tweeted. "Merkel's comments are an acknowledgment of that new reality".

The relationship between Merkel and Trump contrasts with the warm ties between her and former U.S. president Barack Obama - who last week travelled to Berlin to attend a key Protestant conference.

On the other hand, European leaders criticized Trump for his lack of commitment on Climate Change commitments.

Trump also reportedly described German trade practices as "bad, very bad", in Brussels talks last week, complaining that Europe's largest economy sells too many cars to the US.

She added that good relations with France's newly elected President Emmanuel Macron is necessary to cement European ties.
