Davenport AT&T workers join nationwide, three-day strike

An estimated 21,000 wireless phone service workers nationwide at AT&T voted in early February to authorize a strike as their contract expired.

"In today's world we can no longer settle for good paying jobs to be moved overseas", said Wagner.

In April a year ago, 40,000 Verizon workers went on strike. The strike, expected to last until Monday, has already forced retail stores to close, including in Chicago.

AT&T also reached an agreement with another union, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, to hire 1,000 people and open a new call center in Chicago, which the email statement claims was praised by IBEW leadership. "It's time to show them we're not going to sit back and take it", Trainor write on the union's Facebook page. They were a few of about 40,000 AT&T employees who went on a strike over contract issues with the company, according to The Associated Press.

Johnson believed the strike would not involve those employed at the AT&T call center at The Highlands, and that only AT&T Mobility workers - the cellphone sales clerks at AT&T stores - would be affected.

Their union, the Communication Workers of America, called for the strike in an effort to compel the wireless carrier to raise wages and adopt job security assurances against outsourcing, among other demands.

In a statement emailed to Consumerist, AT&T argued that this strike is "baffling" and in "no one's best interest".

Local AT&T workers say they want a fair contract that provides wage increases to cover rising insurance costs.

"We're prepared, and we will continue working hard to serve our customers", said AT&T, which notes that striking workers account for about 14% of its workforce. "Despite making over a $1 billion a month in profits, AT&T continues to squeeze customers and employees at a time when most Americans believe they are worse off financially than the generation before them".

In the months that followed, that jobs report was revised down to say that just 24,000 jobs were added in May of previous year. "As a retail worker, I know that my store and many others across the country could close and disrupt service, but our strike is about demanding conditions that allow us to provide better service for customers too".
