Formula One: Champagne back on ice as Button returns

Jenson Button, who returns to Formula One for a one-off appearance for McLaren at the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend, has insisted he is confident in his ability to come back strongly despite not having driven the new specification cars this season. My neck will be a bit sore after Thursday but we have Friday off and Mikey "Muscles" (Collier), my physio, is back for one weekend. "I have won here before and I lived here for 17 years". Fernando did a good job, but I think it proves the auto itself is working well. I could have said no if I wanted to, as we all can. "It is exciting but I don't feel any pressure".

"It's a great race to come back for, it was my home for 17 years, I've won in Monaco, I've had some great races in Monaco and it's a circuit where the vehicle should work really well", said the 2009 world champion. Lucky enough, the impact isn't as big as in reality but you still get a jolt and a bit of G-force.

"The auto seemed to be working well in Barcelona qualifying". I drove the upgrade in the simulator and it was a definite improvement.

"I will get in the auto and do the best job I can and everything I do, I will get the best out of myself and get the best out of the equipment and team I am working with". I'm still fit, and I've been training probably more than ever, because I've had the time to focus on my triathlon preparation and competitions.

"Of course, for McLaren Honda, this final weekend in May is even more significant than usual this year". Little is expected of him given McLaren's recent performance, which has been so poor they are the only team yet to score a... "Between them we have a formidable driver line-up and it's our aim to keep pushing forward and give them both a vehicle competitive enough to finish in the points".

Alonso, meanwhile, misses his first race in the Principality since 2001 as he bids for victory in this year's Indianapolis 500 - for which he has secured fifth place on the grid.

Monaco is a race where opportunities can present themselves.

While Monaco is regarded by many as McLaren's best chance at scoring points in what has been a fruitless 2017 campaign so far, Button said he did not feel under pressure. "In Monaco, you can't take anything for granted, and it's certainly all to play for".

"Monaco is one of the most legendary races in the world and full of history. Between them we have a formidable driver line-up and it's our aim to keep pushing forward and give them both a vehicle competitive enough to finish in the points".
