On Victory Day, Putin calls for international unity

Russian Federation celebrates the Victory Day, marking the 72nd anniversary of the USSR's victory over Nazi Germany with military parade.

He highlighted that Russia's military was prepared to repeal any threat, just as it had during the Second World War against Nazi Germany, and that no force would ever dominate the Russian people.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that WW2 started due to disunity of the world's leading countries and called for the world to unite at a Victory Day parade in Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in an address on Victory Day on Tuesday, called for worldwide unity and cooperation to fight against violent threats.

The Kremlin chief also urged the worldwide community to unite against threats like terrorism, extremism and neo-Nazism.

Smaller celebrations occurred in cities across Russian Federation on Victory Day, including short parades by citizens holding mementos of fallen soldiers.

The Victory Day is one of the most ceremonious festivals in Russian Federation.

Russian Federation rolled out air defence systems built to operate in sub-zero Arctic conditions on Tuesday as it showcased its military might at a parade on Moscow's Red Square.

The parade marking the anniversary of Nazi Germany's surrender is a highly ritualized display and marked changes in its order are unusual. The government usually hedges against bad weather by seeding clouds over Moscow with concrete particles to clear skies. In addition, the Panzir-SA antiaircraft complex, painted in white, black and gray camouflage to be deployed in the Arctic, was exhibited for the first time at Red Square, as well as the Panzir S-1, the S-400 Triumf complexes and intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Some 10,000 soldiers and sailors and over 110 military vehicles took part in the parade, which is traditionally led by the legendary Soviet T-34 tank from the WWII-era.

"Lessons of the past war remind us to be vigilant, and the Armed Forces of Russian Federation are capable of repelling any potential aggression", Putin told the parade. The event in Moscow's downtown also included the march of the so-called Immortal Regiment (Besmerni Polk), with participation of relatives of people killed or missing during the Great Patriotic War who were showing their photos.

Police said the crowd numbered about 600,000, a show of determination to keep the war's renown alive as living memory of it dwindles.
