Microsoft fixes critical security flaw in Windows Defender

Microsoft issued a patch this past Monday for a vulnerability in its malware protection engine that could allow a remote attacker to gain control over any affected system simply by sending the victim a specially-crafted e-mail or instant message.

"Microsoft have moved very quickly to patch and update the signatures to be able to detect the compromise".

Microsoft has confirmed that a critical vulnerability in its Windows Defender antivirus software puts Windows computers at serious risk.

Google Project Zero researchers Tavis Ormandy and Natalie Silvanovich discovered an exploit dubbed CVE-2017-0290 that lets an attacker remotely access any system without any interaction from the user, reports Ars Technica. The process that handles this behaviour runs at one of the highest possible privilege levels but isn't protected by a sandbox, leaving it vulnerable to attack.

This tool will fix most computer errors, protect you from file loss, malware, hardware failure and optimize your PC for maximum performance.

The actual flaw is identified as CVE-2017-0290 and is a remote code execution flaw in Microsoft's Malware Protection Engine.

And Mr Ormandy later tweeted he had been "blown away" at the speedy response. Propagation of the fix to products that are configured for automatic updates can take up to 48 hours, but users can also trigger a manual update.

Last year, Microsoft focused heavily on bots at Build, and that continued with this year's conference. Essentially, if you haven't installed the Anniversary or Creators updates for Windows 10, quality and security updates will come to a stop.

There has been ongoing news admitting that if users would want to use the all new Windows 10 S Operating System, they would be prohibited to use Google Search and even the Google Chrome browser.

HP and Lenovo will have all-in-one PCs ready for Christmas that feature wake-up through Cortana voice commands and the new welcome screen.

Windows Defender users should check that they are running the most recent version of the software to ensure that their systems are not vulnerable. The flaw can likewise be exploited via file sharing, websites, downloads - anything that is automatically scanned by Windows Defender.
